Could Obama Have Prevented Russia’s Election Interference?

It appears someone has finally asked the right question as it relates to Russian interference with the US political process. The man who asked the right question is US President Donald Trump, who would appear to have been the beneficiary of the interference that has been noted to date. It’s interesting that now Democrat leaders are wanting an answer to the very question President tweeted.

“By the way, if Russia was working so hard on the 2016 Election, it all took place during the Obama Admin. Why didn’t they stop them?” That very question was the by-product of a report issued by the Washington Post. According to the Post, former President Barack Obama was notified in August of 2016 that Russian leader Vladimir Putin had ordered his minions to interfere with the US’ election process to help get Trump elected.

According to Democrat Eric Swalwell, a member of the House Intelligence Committee, “[The response] was inadequate. I think [the administration] could have done a better job informing the American people of the extent of the attack.” This was a direct criticism of Obama’s inaction and something supported by more that few members of Obama’s own party.

One explanation for Obama’s inaction was delivered by former director of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson, who implied that Obama may have been reluctant to say or do anything about what had been going on in fear of looking to be trying to influence the elections himself. There were also concerns that the Russians had the ability to launch a hacking attack that could literally bring the entire election process to its knees.

As the investigation continues into Russia’s interference, it looks like some of the scrutiny is falling away from President Trump in favor of those who may have been able to expose the interference at the very least.
